Truancy is the failure of a student under the age of 18 to attend school when school is in session. The Racine Municipal Court handles truancy cases involving students in the City of Racine or those enrolled in Racine Unified Schools. Both students and parents may be held accountable.
Most truancy cases are issued by officers who find students out of school during class hours and are handled much like any other citation. The Racine Unified School District and Truancy Committee also work together to identify ongoing attendance concerns. These students and their parents are summoned into the courtroom in the City Hall Annex.
