Parks and Recreation

From neighborhood baseball diamonds to Horlick Athletic Field, our Parks Service crews maintain athletic facilities so players and fans can enjoy a safe, high-quality experience.

Field Preparation

• Set up baseball diamonds and Horlick Athletic Field each spring for school, league, and community use.
• Inspect and install backstops, nets, and other field equipment as needed.

Turf & Soil Management

• Mow, slit-seed, fertilize, and aerate fields throughout the year to maintain safe, playable surfaces.
• Repair worn areas, manage drainage, and address soil compaction for optimal field conditions.

Facility Upkeep

• Inspect and maintain scoreboards, lighting, PA systems, fences, and bleachers.
• Repair problem areas on diamonds and fields; prep surfaces for seasonal sports.

Seasonal Support

• Assist with high school sports, adult softball, football at Horlick Athletic Field, and community tournaments.
• Ensure athletic facilities are safe, clean, and ready for heavy use during peak sports seasons.

Spring

• Set up fields, backstops, and equipment for school and league play
• Repair turf damaged by winter; address drainage and compaction issues
• Inspect and maintain scoreboards, fences, bleachers, and Horlick Athletic Field lighting

Summer

• Ongoing mowing, fertilizing, and field maintenance
• Daily safety inspections of athletic equipment and surfaces
• Support tournaments, leagues, and special sports events at Horlick and neighborhood fields

Fall

• Seed and repair worn turf areas; prep fields for fall sports
• Continue equipment inspections and minor repairs
• Maintain bleachers, fences, and lighting for safe use

Winter

• Limited maintenance and equipment servicing
• Plan and prepare fields and facilities, including Horlick Athletic Field, for the next spring season
