Waste Oil and Oil Filters are Hazardous Materials!
Please be responsible and dispose of them properly.

Are you a backyard mechanic?
If you are, then oil and oil filters should be very familiar to you. Do-it-yourselfers produce over 4 million gallons of used oil each year in Wisconsin. Along with the waste oil, close to 1 million oil filters are also changed.

Place used oil or filters in the solid waste or recycling containers

Use a dirt-free pan to drain oil from your vehicle

Pour used oil down any drain

Use a leak-proof container with a lid to hold oil

Pour used oil into any storm drain

Drain out as much oil as possible from the old filter

Pour used oil into the ground

Bring used oil and filters to Department of Public Works

Use oil to suppress or kill weeds

Equipment Maintenance Garage or to a participating business

Pour oil into lakes, rovers or wetlands

Be careful! Drain oil is a hazardous material

Burn waste oil

Mix other products with oil before taking to drop-off

Business that dispose of waste oil, oil filters and antifreeze

The Racine Department of Public Works has made it easy and convenient for residents to dispose of waste oil, oil filters and up to 6 gallons antifreeze. Bring to the Public Works Equipment Maintenance Garage located at 830 South Marquette Street, Monday through Friday from 7:30am to 3:00pm.

NOTE: Containers used in the packaging of new automotive oil are not recyclable. Please dispose of them in solid waste.

Valvoline Instant Oil Change stores accept up to 5 gallons of waste oil and 6 used oil filters per person per day, no exceptions.

Acceptable oil: motor oil, hydraulic oils, transmission oils

Unacceptable materials: solvents, paints/varnishes, gasoline, antifreeze, household chemicals, insecticides, paint/lacquer thinner or any mix of unacceptable material with acceptable material.
