Clarification on the Name of the new King Community Center
As construction continues on the new community center in the Lincoln King neighborhood, the City of Racine would like to clarify questions raised recently about the facility’s name.
The center has always been intended to be named the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center. The name has been reflected throughout the project’s planning, design, and community engagement process.
The community center is a key component of the broader Lincoln King neighborhood revitalization initiative, which also includes the development of new housing opportunities and other neighborhood investments.
The vision for the facility was shaped through an extensive community engagement process led by Payne Consulting in 2022 and 2023. More than 5,800 community members participated in surveys, meetings, workshops, and other engagement activities that helped identify community priorities for the project.
Feedback gathered during that process directly informed the design of the building now under construction. Community priorities identified through the engagement process included flexible gathering spaces, opportunities for youth programming, health and wellness resources, educational programming, and spaces that celebrate the neighborhood’s history and culture.
Project renderings presented throughout the planning process have consistently reflected the facility’s identity as the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center. The completed building will also feature a prominent mural of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that will welcome visitors to the facility.
The City remains committed to sharing accurate information about the project and providing updates as construction progresses. Residents are encouraged to follow official City communication channels for the latest information regarding the community center and the Lincoln King neighborhood revitalization initiative.
Additional project information and updates will be shared as the project moves toward completion.
