Sexually Transmitted Infection Data Dashboard

About the Data Dashboard

This dashboard includes several filters throughout the pages that allow you to explore the data in more detail. Using the filters, you can select a specific timeframe of your choosing and choose which infections you want to display on the graphs. Some pages have numbers at the bottom of the dashboard, showing the total cases of each STI matching the filters you’ve selected.

If no filters are applied, the dashboard defaults to showing the total number of STI cases and the breakdown by category. The totals for Syphilis, Gonorrhea, and Chlamydia combine to form the “Total STI Cases” field

Data Collection

The data for this dashboard were obtained from the Wisconsin Electronic Disease Surveillance System (WEDSS) using the Public Health Analysis Visualization and Reporting (PHAVR) system. No personal or demographic information was accessed or included. The dataset only contains the number of STI cases reported within the City of Racine, which is the jurisdiction of the City of Racine Public Health Department.

What to Know about STI's
Signs and Symptoms

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) don’t always cause noticeable symptoms, and in fact many people have STIs but are unaware because they either have no symptoms or the symptoms are mistaken for another condition. However, the most common signs and symptoms can include things like:

  • Unusual discharge from the penis or vagina
  • Painful or burning sensation during urination
  • Sores, bumps, or rashes in the genital area
  • Lower abdominal pain and itching or irritation.
  • Some people may also experience flu-like symptoms such as fever or swollen glands.
Long-Term Effects of STIs

If untreated, STIs can lead to serious, long-term health effects. These negative effects include Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), infertility, and chronic pain. Sexually transmitted infections can also result in pregnancy complications including ectopic pregnancy and miscarriage. Some STIs can even lead to organ damage, nervous system issues, blindness, and death.

Testing

Two of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of STIs are to be regularly tested and to use condoms or other protective barriers. As many STIs can be present without any signs at all, the only way to know your status is through regular testing. Public health experts recommend getting tested every three to six months if you are sexually active. Regular testing, and getting treatment as needed, help protect your health and that of your partners by preventing the spread of infections.

There are many convenient and confidential places to get tested throughout the Racine area.
