Mayor Mason is seeking two community members to serve on the Racine Police and Fire Commission — a civilian board with real authority over our public safety workforce.
What the Commission does:
- Hires and appoints police and fire personnel, up to and including the Police and Fire Chiefs
- Conducts disciplinary hearings and personnel proceedingsAn official record of things said or done
- Hears and investigates citizen complaints filed with the Commission
- Ensures accountability and professionalism across both departments
A note on scope: The Commission focuses on personnel — not department policy or operationsThe fact or condition of functioning or being active.. CommissionersA person appointed to a role on or by a commission. do not set rules for how officers patrol or how firefighters respond. Their work is about who serves, and whether they serve with integrity.
We’re looking for community members who are:
- A Racine resident in good standing
- Fair-minded, impartial, and a careful decision-maker
- A good listener with a commitment to community trust
- Available for quarterly meetings and occasional hearings
- Not currently employed by the City of Racine
This is a volunteer position with a 5-year term. No prior law enforcement or firefighting experience is required. The Commission values lived community perspective. Diverse backgrounds — legal, social services, business, education, faith communities — are all welcome and encouraged.
